Have you ever wondered why a wild dog howls at the moon; did their ancestors howl at the moon? Jack London uses Buck because he is a dog forced into change. Buck does things by instinct, not by knowing.Jack London uses the “calling” to transform Buck into a wild wolf by determination and connecting with his ancestors.

Buck changes through out the story,he listens to his instincts, and learns to survive in the wild. When Buck enters the wild, he must learn countless lessons in order to survive, and he learns them well. But, the novel suggests that his success in the frozen North is not merely a matter of learning the ways of the wild; rather, Buck gradually recovers primitive instincts and memories that his wild ancestors possessed, which have been buried as dogs have become civilized creatures. In chapter 7,“He sprang at the foremost man (it was the chief of the Yeehats), ripping the throat wide open till the rent jugular spouted a fountain of blood.” Jack London. This is how Buck listens to his instincts, and learns how to survive.

Buck's reacts to the changes around him, he starts following the "call" of the wild. He began to adapt to his surroundings. As he went on, he began to adapt to his nature as well. Now as,everyday passed he would begin to learn more and more about his nature. In Chapter 7,”He was glad for one thing: the rope was off his neck. That had given them an unfair advantage; but now that it was off, he would show them. They would never get another rope around his neck. Upon that he was resolved. For two days and nights he neither ate nor drank, and during those two days and nights of torment, he accumulated a fund of wrath that boded ill for whoever first fell foul of him. His eyes turned blood-shot, and he was metamorphosed into a raging fiend. So changed was he that the Judge himself would not have recognized him; and the express messengers breathed with relief when they bundled him off the train at Seattle.” This is how Buck changes and reacts to the changes around him.

Yes, I have wondered why wild dogs howl at the moon, and I finally found an answer, it’s because their ancestors did it;their just recovering their instincts.

I liked seeing myself write a fairly well paper after learning so much. I wonder if I could do this if it wasn't being assitied by the teacher. How might my paper turn out then? What if it was worse?
